Global Shading Day 2026

Saturday, March 21

Global Shading Day is a special event by the European Solar Shading Organisation to raise awareness about the positive benefits of solar shading products.

It takes place on the first day of spring to highlight how shading can help combat climate change, creating more sustainable, energy efficient buildings.

The goal is to help people find out more about the benefits of using smart solar shading for our comfort and wellbeing, energy efficiency and the environment. For more information about Global Shading Day visit the website.

“It would be logical to make smart solar shading a standard in building legislation, especially now that climate change continues unabated.”

Prof Shady Attia

What is solar shading?

Solar shading has been widely identified by experts around the world as a way to help create healthy, productive and comfortable indoor environments.

Solar shading includes products that can be fitted externally such as awnings, pergolas and roller shutters and products that can be fitted internally such as venetian blinds, roller blinds, shutters and roman blinds.

They can be manual or automatic equipped with sensors known as smart systems.

Benefits of solar shading

Creates climate resilient buildings

Reduces air conditioning needs

Passive cooling = consumes no energy

Improves people’s wellbeing

The latest research

The average number of days per year that Europe will require air conditioning will increase by around 30% between now and 2050 according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

This will significantly increase energy demand and increase associated greenhouse gas emissions for cooling in buildings for the next decades.

A recent study of Guidehouse, a leading global provider of consulting services to the public and commercial markets, has proven that automated solar shading can minimise energy use.

Did you know?…

Solar shading can reduce our reliance on air conditioning, helping prevent buildings from overheating and regulating glare from daylight exposure.

Reduce energy use by up to

60%

for cooling by 2050

Lower pollution by

58%

and avoiding harmful greenhouse gas emissions

Save

€285

on energy by 2050

Increase of

30%

in the number of days air conditioning will be required between now and 2050 if nothing changes

Less than

50%

of buildings in the EU are equipped with solar shading devices

“It’s time to prioritise solar shading to combat overheating and pave the way for a sustainable future.”
