Solar shading can play important role as energy boss makes efficiency plea

“A massive ramp-up” is needed to help make UK homes more energy efficient, according to an energy firm boss.

Michael Lewis, of E.on, has told the government’s Environmental Audit Committee: “Our plea to the government has always been to push hard on energy efficiency, because that’s the proven way, the only silver bullet, for this crisis.

“It will reduce prices, reduce energy consumption and contribute to net-zero on a sustainable basis.

“So the next phase of tackling this has to be a massive ramp-up in measures to deal with energy efficiency.”

Due to their age, many homes in the UK don’t have insulation. As a result, the UK has the leakiest housing stock in Europe.

Mr Lewis added: “If the 19 million homes are properly insulated it will save the equivalent of six nuclear power plants worth of energy.”

Solar shading

Solar shading products can play important part in meeting the demands of Mr Lewis, because they are one of the easiest and cheapest ways to improve energy efficiency and prevent overheating.

Internal and external shading products – blinds, awnings, and shutters – are passive solutions which have been used for to keep buildings warm and cool, and to ultimately save energy, for centuries.

Blinds and shutters help retain heat during the winter and help keep them cooler in summer by preventing sunlight from entering.

Unlike air conditioning and heating systems, once installed solar shading products are passive solutions meaning they don’t require an energy input for operation.

The energy-saving benefits of blinds and shutters will vary depending on many factors, including the type and amount of glazing, the type of shading, and the location of your property. However, important savings can be made in homes, offices, and other buildings.
