‘Closing shading can save heat in winter’

UK media outlets are promoting the idea homeowners should close shading as soon as the sun goes down in winter.

Doing so can help save energy and retain heat, as shown by BBSA-supported research.

Citing a clip from The Martin Lewis Money Show and an Octopus Energy article, Wales Online and the Express have both published pieces in recent weeks.

Research carried out at the University of Salford’s Energy House proves the point and the concept has been promoted by the BBSA for several years.

In the winter, during the day when it is sunny, open blinds to benefit from the free solar energy from the sun and close them in the evening to provide extra insulation and reduce heat loss to save energy and money.

Independent research by the University of Salford’s Energy House labs has demonstrated that blinds and shutters can reduce heat loss through windows by up to 33%*.

Commissioned and funded by the British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA), the data shows that window blinds and shutters can have a significant positive impact on energy savings.
