BBSA supports Child Safety Week to raise awareness of window blind safety

The British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA), is supporting Child Safety Week (June 5-11, 2023) to help raise awareness of window blind safety.

The BBSA is working in partnership with the Child Accident Prevention Trust to provide information and resources about window blind safety including how to make existing blinds safer and to buy new blinds which are safe by design.

Window blinds with an operating cord or chain that could form a loop must be kept out of the reach of babies and young children.

There are a range of safety devices available for every type of blind including cord/chain tidies and tensioners as well as cleats for storing excess cord.

A blind which is safe by design is one that is cordless or has concealed or tensioned cords.

‘Safety Made Simple’ is the theme of this year’s Child Safety Week to help families build confidence and skills in managing the risks to children’s safety.

Andrew Chalk, director of operations at the BBSA, said: “We’re encouraging parents, carers, childminders and landlords to check their blinds and to follow our simple steps to ensure all window blinds are safe around children.

“Our Make it Safe website is packed with videos and information about what to look for in new blinds and how to make existing blinds safer.”
