Design
Sail blinds or tensioned fabric sails can be both functional and aesthetic. The visual impact can be striking or subtle and they’re fantastic at reducing heat gain and glare in large spaces with glazed roofs or glazed facades.
Careful positioning and orientation of the sails can optimise the performance during the day and between summer and winter. Fire retardant, machine washable and high light transmission fabrics are available. Mesh fabrics can retain visual connection to outside spaces while cutting glare – particularly useful for glazed facades. Printing allows for branding to be added.
Operation
Most sail blinds are designed for fixed operation but a few systems include active operation to optimise performance. Operational considerations include:
- The size and position of the sails should address the specific requirements of the space and its occupants.
- Tilting the sails up towards the north can enhance performance while providing open views of the sky.
- Fabrics with high levels of light transmission reduce the requirement for artificial lighting.
- No moving parts and simple machine washing reduces maintenance and increases lifespan.
- Self-tensioning sails can also reduce reflected sound to improve acoustics.
Window blind safety
