Design
The performance of many dim-out blinds is determined by their material and operation. They are an ideal choice for bedrooms or home cinemas where a high degree of light exclusion is required.
A true room darkening blind usually consists of a roller blind using a room darkening fabric with a head box to cover the fabric roll and side and bottom channels to prevent light from entering around the edges. These blinds can be fitted either in the recess or outside the recess.
Domestically, the high degree of light exclusion is often not necessary and a standard blind using a room darkening fabric may be sufficient in most cases. Some Venetian blinds are designed to provide a high level of light exclusion by not having cord holes in the slats of the blind.
Room darkening fabrics are available in a variety of colours and finishes.
Operation
Operation options will depend on the style of blind you chose but both manual and motorised options are generally available on most blind styles. Motorised blinds can be linked to your home cinema system.
Window blind safety
The BBSA recommends using blinds which do not contain operating cords or chains, or which have concealed tensioned cords. These products are ‘safe by design’ and are widely available. For more information visit www.makeitsafe.org.uk.
