Design
Insect screens can be used on all types of windows and doors to keep flies, wasps, moths, mosquitoes, and other insects outside.
Most insect screens use a roller blind type system and a fine, mesh screen which tends to be made of fibre glass. They are available in wide range of colours and can be washed in soapy water. They run inside channels either side of the screen and are flush fitting with the bottom rail. When this is fully closed, it provides complete protection. When not in use, the screen is protected and out of sight, preserving your view.
Operation
Most insect screens are manually operated, but motorisation is possible.
Window blind safety
The BBSA recommends using blinds which do not contain operating cords or chains, or which have concealed tensioned cords. These products are ‘safe by design’ and are widely available. For more information visit www.makeitsafe.org.uk.
Comfort and energy saving
Insect screens are growing in popularity in domestic environments where they are fitted to doors to allow for ventilation while keeping insects out. When fitted to folding door systems, homeowners can open up the back of their home in the evening and carry-on using lights without having to worrying about moths.
